Sky ECC: police intercepted an “encrypted phone” network at the servers

Investigators infiltrated the Sky ECC platform and intercepted hundreds of millions of messages — not by cracking the cipher, but by getting between users and the company's servers.

01What actually happened

In early 2021, Belgian, Dutch and French authorities infiltrated the Sky ECC “cryptophone” network used heavily by organized crime, intercepting roughly a billion messages (about half decrypted) before seizing servers hosted in France. Investigators reportedly used a man-in-the-middle technique and copied server memory to access traffic, leading to thousands of arrests. The takedown turned on infiltrating the service infrastructure and endpoints, not on breaking the underlying encryption math.

02Why it matters

A closed “secure phone” network whose operator controls the servers is a single point of infiltration. Cipher minimizes what the operator can see and is built to be independently audited rather than to ask for blind trust — but it cannot protect a compromised or seized device.

Cipher is built for exactly this gap: zero-access encryption, no phone number, on-device AI, and minimal metadata — so the failure in this story can't happen the same way.
